LAHORE: NADRA has started preparing a database for implementing the Punjab government’s ‘Support-A-Family’ project for relief and rehabilitation of quake victims, said Punjab Chief Minister Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi on Tuesday.
The CM was addressing a briefing at NADRA Headquarters in Islamabad. Pakistan Muslim League (PML) President Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain, PML General Secretary Mushahid Hussain, NADRA Chairman Brig (r) Saleem Ahmad Moeen and Punjab Chief Secretary and Relief Operations chief Salman Siddique were present on the occasion.
Elahi said that 500,000 people would benefit in the first phase of this scheme and each family would be given financial assistance of Rs 6,000 per month for a year. Priority would be given to widows, orphans and the disabled and families of those who lost their breadwinners, he added.
The PML president said that houses were being constructed for 100 quake-affected families in Alaiy and relief activities were being accelerated. He said that cooperation of independent organisations was being acquired to ensure transparency in relief and rehabilitation process. Relief activities in affected areas were also reviewed at the meeting.
Elahi said that preparations had started to give practical shape to ‘Support-A-Family’ programme. He was told that NADRA had collected 90 percent data on the quake victims, which would help identify deserving people for this scheme. He said that implementation of the project would start in December, he appreciated NADRA’s services and said that its cooperation would help in transparent relief and rehabilitation.
The CM said that a strategy had been evolved to ensure contact between donors and the affected families through website or in-person. He said the government would bear the administrative expenditure of the programme and the donors would only support the victims.
He said the Punjab government had spent Rs 1.75 billion on relief activities so far while 6,000 to 7,000 tents were being dispatched to the affected areas every day. He said that 213,000 tents would be sent to the devastated areas by November 30. An autonomous and permanent body had started functioning to implement the programme and to coordinate relief activities, he added.
NADRA Chairman Moeen showed NADRA’s various sections to the CM and Shujaat, which were operating around the clock. He said that NADRA had not only become self-reliant but had also emerged as the most active public service institution in Pakistan.
